Pine-Cone Santa

Crafter Jody Horvath of Wapiti, Wyoming, shows how to make a pine-cone Santa with natural materials such as glue, wool, faux fur and wire. This makes a great family project.

Figure A--Start by attaching two similar-size pine cones to Santa's boots, using glue and wire. Make sure the boots stand upright when finished.

Figure B--Attach Santa's doll arms to pine cones in a similar fashion. Glue Santa's head onto a pine cone and secure firmly with wire.

Figure C--Now wire the whole thing together. Start by wiring the boots to the pine-cone body, making sure Santa's head and his boots are facing the same way, then add the arms. Run the wire from the arms around both sides of the head. Santa should stand by on his own at this point. If he doesn't, start all over.

Figure D--Fashion a beard out of wool. Look for wool that's creamy-colored instead of totally white. Use a hot-glue gun to attach the beard. Don't worry about the beard being too thick--you can trim it later.

Figure E--Use fabric remnants to wrap the midsection of the body. The color of the fabric doesn't matter because it will be covered later. Make sure the wrap secures the legs to the pine-cone body. Use a line of hot glue to secure the end of the wrap.

Figure F--Glue dried floral moss onto the fabric wrap. Use big pieces and make sure to get it under Santa's beard. Tie the moss with a raffia belt. Make sure it covers the wires that hold Santa together.

Figure G--Now it's time to dress Santa. Start with a tiny red bandana, then add accessories such as a miniature Christmas tree wired to Santa's hand, a small cowboy lasso over his shoulder and a small sack of toys attached to his back.

Figure H--Top it off with a cowboy hat. Give Santa's beard a trim if necessary before gluing on the hat.
