Legend of the Little Donkey

On a wintery night in a small town not far away from busy Jerusalem, a little donkey wandered into a stable.
It was cold and she had come in to get warm. It seemed to be a very crowded place, and it was a strange group gathered there. She recognized some shepherds often seen about the rocky hills, and there were lots of animals! They were all focused on something.
The donkey pushed her way to the front where she saw a man standing, and a pretty dark haired young lady sitting, looking adoringly into a manger.
The little donkey edged closer and looked over the side of the manger. She saw a tiny bright - eyed baby looking out at a brand new world. Five wee baby fingers reached up and touched the donkey's nose. It was the sweetest caress the little donkey had ever known. She lay down beside the manger and knew she would never want to leave that little baby's side.
When the man, woman and baby left. they wouldn't let the donkey follow. She did not belong to them. Her owner came and drove his flocks of animals back to Bethany where he lived.
Many years passed. The little donkey grew old. She became a mother and a grandmother. She pastured near the Mount of Olives overlooking Jerusalem and she had a very feisty grandson colt that liked to play and buck and have fun all day long. Sometimes his owner had to tie him to settle him down.
One day two men came to the village. They told the owner of the donkey " The Lord has need of your colt." The feisty grandson acted up because he didn't want to go . At that moment a man with very kind eyes passed the old donkey and touched her. She recognized that gentle touch. It was the touch of that tiny babe from the manager in Bethlehem.
The old donkey beckoned her grandsom aside, and in their own language told him he should straighten up because he had been chosen to carry the King.
The feisty little donkey pricked up his ears, held his head high and straightened his back.
He would proudly carry the King of Kings!
