On Thanksgiving Eve

by Ruth Blackwell 1962

I stand late in the field, facing the sky,
Thanking God for the day just gone by.

I thank Him for men, with purpose and might,
Who tamed the wild earth to make futures bright;
thank Him for women with vision to see
What these vast acres could actually be!

I thank Him for sunshine, and mercy of rain;
I thank Him for cattle; bins full of grain.
I thank Him for love, I thank Him for life,
And thank Him again for this country wife.

With heart overflowing, I turn to the west,
I thank Him for sunsets, and I feel I am blest!
