Brown-Eyed Susans

1 c butter or margarine

1 c sugar

1 egg

1/2 tsp almond extract

1/4 tsp yellow food color

3-1/4 c sifted flour

1 tbsp baking powder

1 tsp salt

1/3c semisweet chocolate pieces (64)

Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy

Beat in egg, almond extract and food color

Sift together flour, baking powder and salt

Gradually blend into creamed mixture

Turn dough onto lightly floured surface; knead gently to form a ball

Wrap in plastic wrap or waxed paper and chill several hours, or until dough can be handled easily

Divide dough into 4th's Roll one fourth at a time to make a 12x6 rectangle

Cut each rectangle into strips 3/4" wide and 6" long

On long side of strip cut slits 1/2" apart and 3/4 of the way through to opposite side

Roll each strip like a jelly roll

Dough has tendency to break when rolled

Hold roll together with fingers and pinch slightly on bottom when placing on baking sheet

This spreads the blossoms

Turn cut ends down a little to form flower petals

Makes about 64
