| Brown-Eyed Susans 1 c butter or margarine1 c sugar1 egg1/2 tsp almond extract1/4 tsp yellow food color3-1/4 c sifted flour1 tbsp baking powder1 tsp salt1/3c semisweet chocolate pieces (64) Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffyBeat in egg, almond extract and food colorSift together flour, baking powder and saltGradually blend into creamed mixtureTurn dough onto lightly floured surface; knead gently to form a ballWrap in plastic wrap or waxed paper and chill several hours, or until dough can be handled easily Divide dough into 4th's Roll one fourth at a time to make a 12x6 rectangleCut each rectangle into strips 3/4" wide and 6" longOn long side of strip cut slits 1/2" apart and 3/4 of the way through to opposite sideRoll each strip like a jelly rollDough has tendency to break when rolledHold roll together with fingers and pinch slightly on bottom when placing on baking sheetThis spreads the blossomsPlace about 1" apart on ungreased baking sheetTurn cut ends down a little to form flower petalsCenter a chocolate piece, flat side up, in each flowerBake in 375 oven for 8 to 10 minutesMakes about 64 | |
