| Valentine's Day has a Rosy History Youngesters who exchange Valentine's on Feb. 14th are taking part in a custom which is more than 600 years old. People in England probably celebrated Valentine's Day as early as the 1400's, but there are differing stories or legends about the origins of both the name and the selection of that particular date. The early Christian church had at least two saints named Valentine One Valentine is associated with lovers because he disobeyed the order ofthe Roman Emperor Claudius II in the A.D. 200's. Claudius thought single men made better soldiers and forbade their marrying, but Valentine opted on the side of young lovers and secretly married couples. The other Saint Valentine was imprisoned by the Romans for refusing to worship their gods. He was a favorite of children who supposedly tossed affectionate notes between the bars of his cell windows, which may explain why people exchange messages on Valentine's Day. Saint Valentine who knows which one was executed on Feb. 14th about 269 A.D. the church formally set that date as St. Valentine's Day. The earliest records of Valentine's Day in English also tell that birds chose their mates on Feb. 14th. Geoffrey Chaucer, an English poet of the 1300's wrote: "For this was on St. Valentine's Day, "When fowl commeth there to choose his mate." Another Valentine story traces the custom of sending verses to a Frenchman, Charles, Duke of Orleans, who was captured by the English during the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, and taken to England where he was imprisoned. On Valentine's Day he sent his wife a rhymed love letter from his cell in the Tower of London. Many early Valentine's Day customs involved ways that single women could learn who their furture husbands would be. Englishwomen of the 1700's wrote men's names on scraps of paper, rolled each in a little piece of clay, and dropped them all into water. The first paper that rose to the surface supposedly bore the name of the woman's true love. Commercial Valentines emerged in the early 1800's but today's children, instead of purchasing ready-made cards, often make their own Valentines from paper doilies, red paper and pictures cut from magazines. Kits are also available which include everything needed to assemble the cards. But wheather the cards are a simple homemade variety or a fancied up version with lace, ribbons and cupids, the message has remained the same down throught the years: "Be My Valentine!" | |

| Cupid is the most famous of Valentine symbols and everybody knows that boy armed with bow and arrows, and piercing hearts . He is known as a mischievous, winged child armed with bow and arrows. The arrows signify desires and emotions of love, and Cupid aims those arrows at Gods and Humans, causing them to fall deeply in love. Cupid has always played a role in the celebrations of love and lovers. In ancient Greece he was known as Eros, the young son of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. To the Roman's he was Cupid, and his mother was Venus.
There is a very interesting story about Cupid and His mortal Bride Psyche in Roman mythology. Venus was jealous of the beauty of Psyche, and ordered Cupid to punish the mortal. But instead, Cupid fell deeply in love with her. He took her as his wife, but as a mortal she was forbidden to look at him. Psyche was happy until her sisters persuaded her to look at Cupid. as soon as Psyche looked at Cupid, Cupid punished her by leaving her. Their lovely castle and gardens vanished too. Psyche found herself alone in an open field with no signs of other beings or Cupid. As she wandered trying to find her love, she came upon the temple of Venus. Wishing to destroy her, the goddess of love gave Psyche a series of tasks, each harder and more dangerous then the last.
For her last task Psyche was given a little box and told to take it to the underworld. She was told to get some of the beauty of Proserpine, the wife of Pluto, and put it in the box. During her trip she was given tips on avoiding the dangers of the realm of the dead. She was also warned not to open the box. But Temptation overcame Psyche and she opened the box. But instead of finding beauty, she found deadly slumber.
Cupid found her lifeless on the ground. He gathered the deadly sleep from her body and put it back in the box. Cupid forgave her, as did Venus. The gods, moved by Psyche's love for Cupid made her a goddess. Today, Cupid and his arrows have become the most popular of love signs, and love is most frequently depicted by two hearts pierced by an arrow, Cupid's arrow.

| Hearts It was formerly believed that the heart was the seat of all human emotions. Accordingly, the gifting of a heart signified the selfless act of giving everything to someone you love. Though the ancients were not aware that the heart was responsible for pumping blood though the circulatory system, yet they knew one thing for sure that the heart was the center of all feelings. This ancient belief has lingered on through the ages | |

| Ribbons, Laces and Frills
Ribbons and laces have been associated with love and romance since the days when a knight used to ride into a battle sporting the scarf or handkerchief presented to him by his ladylove. In the bygone times, laces were used making women's handkerchiefs. It was also usual for a lady to drop her handkerchief in the path of the man whose attention she wished to draw

| Rebus
Although it had many forms, a rebus usually was a romantic verse written in ink with certain words omitted and illustrated with a picture. Meant to be a riddle, they were not always easy to decipher

| The Puzzik A Puzzik is a quaint sort of homemade valentine which was a sort of puzzle that the receiver had to solve. Not only did she have to decipher the message but also to figure how to refold the paper once it was opened. The order of the verses was usually numbered, and the recipient had to twist the folds to determine what was being said. | |
