Poinsettias
are native to Mexico, where they grow as tall, wild shrubs. Because it was used in Nativity Scenes, Poinsettias became known as Flowers of the Holy Night. The first US Ambassador to Mexico, Joel Poinsett, brought cuttings of the plant back home in the 1820's. People who work with plants have developed Poinsettias so they are now shorter and bushier than those that grew in the wild. The red and other brightly colored parts look like petals but are really modified leaves, called bracts. The true flowers are the small, greenish round parts in the center of the bloom
