Dec. 24th, 1688 - First European settlers of Texas wiped out by the Karankawa Indians at the French Fort St. Louis, near present Victoria, Texas.
Dec. 24th, 1814 - The War of 1812 between the U.S. and Britian was ended with the signing of the ‘Treaty of Ghent’. Although due to the slowness of communications at time the ‘Battle of New Orleans’ was fought without knowledge by either side that war was over.
Dec. 24th, 1906 - The first radio broadcast was made by Professor Reginald Fessenden of Brant Rock, Massachusetts, using a 429-foot-high antenna and an alternator driven by a steam engine. It was of religious content with poetry reading, a speech and a violin solo.

Dec. 24th, 1946 - the first time a church service was televised from a church, Grace Episcopal Church in New York City. Prior religious services had been filmed in a studio or an outdoor location like a park or stadium.

Dec. 24th, 1958 - President Eisenhower’s Christmas message was broadcasted with the Atlas satellite.
Dec. 24th, 1979 - Soviets invaded Afghanistan.
