| Old Salts 1 c shortening1 c sugar1 egg1 tsp vanilla1-1/4 c sifted flour1/4 tsp salt1/2 tsp baking powder1/2 tsp baking soda3 c quick cooking rolled oatsSalt (for tops) Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffyBeat in egg and vanilla to mix thoroughlySift together flour, 1/4 tsp salt, baking powder and soda, add to creamed mixtureStir in rolled oatsDivide dough in quarters and place each part on sheet of lightly floured waxed paperShape in roll 1" in diameter and about 12" longWrap in waxed paper and chill several hours or overnight(Its easier to shape soft dough on waxed paper lightly floured)Cut in 1/4" slices (dough will be crumbly and cannot be cut thinner)Sprinkle tops lightly with saltPlace on greased baking sheetBake 375F for 10 to 12 minutesMakes 12 dozen | |
