Old Salts

1 c shortening

1 c sugar

1 egg

1 tsp vanilla

1-1/4 c sifted flour

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

3 c quick cooking rolled oats

Salt (for tops)

Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy

Beat in egg and vanilla to mix thoroughly

Sift together flour, 1/4 tsp salt, baking powder and soda, add to creamed mixture

Stir in rolled oats

Divide dough in quarters and place each part on sheet of lightly floured waxed paper

Shape in roll 1" in diameter and about 12" long

Wrap in waxed paper and chill several hours or overnight

(Its easier to shape soft dough on waxed paper lightly floured)

Cut in 1/4" slices (dough will be crumbly and cannot be cut thinner)

Sprinkle tops lightly with salt

Place on greased baking sheet

Bake 375F for 10 to 12 minutes

Makes 12 dozen
