Exotic Fruits-Plantain Bananas

Bananas contain about 20% sugar and are rich in vitamins and minerals, especially phosphorus, potassium, calcium and iron

Bananas are considered a perfect baby food

There are 300 varieties of bananas

Bananas should never be refrigerated

They are best stored at room temperature, 55F to 60F

Sometimes black spots, like freckles, appear on the skin

Theses are an indication that the bananas are ripe and have developed their full flavor

The pulp or meat is soft and creamy

Bananas fall in to 2 types

The Sweet Fruity Type

The Starchy Vegetable Type or Plantain

The Plantain is never eaten raw

It can be baked, fried or added to stews or casseroles

When baked or fried, the plantain, the Starchy banana, needs seasoning like salt, pepper, herbs or hot spices to enhance its flavor
