| Good King Wenceslaus, back in 10th century, brought a feast to a poor family and started on of our most cherished Christmas traditions - Sharing food with others. You probably know the story of this compassionate king from the popular Christmas carol: On a bitter cold winters nighh, Wencesalus spied a peasant from his palace window. Moved by the sight of the poor man trying to find firewood, the king packed up a basket of food and, with his servant, trudged throught he snow to the peasants home. Since them, baking cookies for friends, bringing care packages to the needy and cooking for others have become annual Christmas traditions enjoyed by all. Wenceslas, the Good King – known from a carol written by J.M. Neale, but having little to do with the real Wenceslas, Duke of Bohemia. Born in AD907 was devoted Christian and worked very closely with the clergy and tried to improve the educational and religious level of his people. Due to his support of the Christian German King Henry the Fowler as successor to Charlemagne, he was murdered by his own brother Boleslav’s followers. His relics were taken to the church of St. Vitus in Prague, which became a cult center and a place of pilgrimage. Within 20 years Wenceslas became Bohemia’s patron saint and his image started appearing on coinage.
