Matrimonial Cake
My mother’s recipe

1 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
1-3/4 cup oatmeal
1 tsp soda
1-3/4 cup flour

Filling
1 pkg dates (cut fine)
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 cup water-cook until thick
Put ½ of crumbly mixture in greased pan and spread filling on it, then put rest of mixture on top and bake 30 minutes at 350
Serve with whipped cream or plain.
