Onion Patio Bread

2 cups warm water (105 to 115)

2 pkg active dry yeast

2 tbsp sugar

2 tsp salt

2 tbsp soft butter or margarine

1 pkg (7/10 oz) dry onion flavor salad dressing mix

4-1/2 cups sifted all purpose flour

If possible, check temperature of warm water with thermometer

Sprinkle yeast over water in large bowl of electric mixer

Let stand a few minutes, stir to dissolve

Add sugar, salt, butter, salad dressing mix and 3 cups flour

Beat, at low speed, until blended

Then beat, at medium speed, until smooth about 2 minutes

Scrape down side of bowl and beaters with rubber scraper

With wooden spoon, gradually beat in rest of flour until blended

Cover bowl with waxed paper, then with towel

Let rise in warm place (85F) free from drafts, about 45 minutes or until light and bubbly and more than double in bulk

Meanwhile, preheat oven to 375F

Lightly grease a 1-1/2 or 2 quart casserole

With wooden spoon, stir down batter

Beat vigorously 1/2 minute, or about 25 strokes

Turn into prepared casserole

Bake 55 to 60 minutes, or until nicely browned

Remove from casserole to wire rack

Let cool completely, or serve slightly warm, cut into wedges

Makes 1 loaf

For stronger onion flavor, use 2 pkgs dry onion flavor salad dressing mix
